Ideas for Saving on Lighting

Being energy efficient is one of the most important ways to save some hard earned money. Energy efficient bulbs have revolutionized the lighting technology. There are more simple ways to reduce the lighting usage and cost.

1. Avoid multiple fittings: The easiest way to reduce the wastage of electricity is by not using too much of lightings in any room. Choose bulbs which serve the purpose of room and its atmosphere. Multiple lights with low voltage bulbs would not reduce the power usage, in fact the more lights in the room, the more power is utilized.

2. Use multiple switches: When installing lights in a large open space, it is good idea to install multiple switches to cover the different areas of the room. This would help in restricted use of lighting of any particular area that should be used.

3. Install dimmers: Dimmers are devices connected to a light fixture and used to lower the brightness of light. Dimming the lights reduces the amount of electricity usage and increases the life of low-voltage lighting such as halogen lights.

4. Electric lamp: An electrical lamp will give ample light at low cost than overhead light. It enhances the ambiance of the room and gives the focused light for task like sewing, reading, etc. Using the lamp during night would also help not disturbing the others in the room.

5. Installing motion detectors: While installing outdoor security lighting make sure to have a built in motion sensors or timers so that it operate when there is a need. It can even be installed in the stairs.

6. Solar lights: Using solar lighting will help in saving a lot of current. Lamps fitted with batteries that store energy form the sun can help in saving power usage.

7. Keep lights clean: A clean bulb or dirty lampshade will obstruct light. Dust the bulb and wise the shad regularly.

8. Place lamps in corners: Walls are the reflective surfaces. Placing lamps in the corners allows the light to reflect from the two wall surfaces, which will help in fewer lights overall.

9. Light colors when painting your walls: A lighter shade of walls reflects more light than the darker. Take the advantage of it and use lower wattage light bulbs in the house. Also consider painting the walls with reflective property.

10. Use natural Lights: Natural lights in rooms like kitchen would save lot of electricity. When buying the house or renovating the house make sure to position the rooms and spaces where the family spend the most of time to be in the north or northeast so that the rooms will be able to capture the daylight.

11. Turn the lights off: This is an old idea of saving electricity. But the key to save the unnecessary wastage of power. Irrespective of how many rooms and how lights are there in a single room, ensure to switch it off when the room is not in use. Unplug the appliances as soon as the work is over or moving out of the room.
