How to Prevent Clogged Drains

Listed here are 10 tips to help in keeping the drains running freely.

Never Wait for a Mainline Blockage

When you have a clogged sewer line often, maybe every year or two, don’t keep getting it cleaned. Hire the sewer service companies to find the reason that is causing the clogging. This is done by sending a remote camera down the line for a visual inspection of the drain. There could be many reasons for the recurring issue of clogging such as the tree roots entering through the clay tile joints, rotted cast iron that allows the soils to fall into the line or even the partial collapsed pipe that creates the blockage. These blockages cannot be repaired ourselves, instead of hiring the professional to find the cause and get is fixed is more hassle-free and less time consuming rather than frequently backing it up with sewer cleaning bills.

Lint catcher installation in the washing machine hose

Lint, the bits of fabrics, facial tissue, and event the socks may sneak through the washing machine drain hose. These cause the blockages in the drain. To avoid this ensure to put a mesh lint trap at the end of the drain hose which is easily available in every hardware store. If not, try using an old nylon stocking to close the end of the hose. Keep replacing the lint trap whenever it is full.

Putting bacteria to work

When the hair, food, and other stuff cause the clogging of the drain, use the organic method of using bacteria to break down the organic matter in the drain. Simply add bacteria, which can be bought from the store either in granular or liquid form, in the drain which will consume organic matter and prevent clogging. This is a non-corrosive method and hence the pipes will not be harmed and bacterial will not interfere with those in the septic system.

Never pour the grease in the drain

Warm grease runs down the drain, cools down, and starts forming a clog. Other debris gets stuck in it and increases the clogging. The solution is to avoid pouring the grease or oil down the drain. Keep a jar or bottle to collect the grease and to be thrown away.

Never rinse cement, sand and other joint compounds in the drain

The joint compound hardens because of the chemical reaction. It will settle under the water making a rock hard clog in the drain. Sand also builds up and traps the debris in it to form clogs. The joint compounds and sand are difficult to be removed. To avoid the problem, never wash these things in the drain instead, let the rinse water in a container for some time so that the solid materials settle down. The water can be thrown in the backyard and the sludge into the garbage can.

Stop the hair from reaching the drain

The tub and shower drain will be clogged with the hair and soap combination. Remove the hair debris from the drain using the drain snake. But even this can be avoided by ensuring that the hair does not reach the drain by using various sizes of mesh screens for this purpose. Another option is by replacing the stopper assembly with a built-in screen
