The living room is the most important room in any house where the family gathers together to spend quality time. Hence making this space functional and comfortable for the family members is important and also remember to decorate the room as stylish as possible as the visitors are welcomed here.
There are some common interior design mistakes that most of us do in the living room. Keep reading to find out if you are also making the same mistakes and the ways to fix them.
Proportion:
It is one of the key elements of any interior design. It is the way the items in a room relate to one another. Each component of the room actually varies in size, shape, and even color to keep the things visually interesting, but they should come together to make space look unified. To do this, the furniture arrangements should be most aesthetically pleasing when kept in 2:3 ratios.
For example, the coffee table should be two-third the length of the couch and a couch should be two-third the width of area rug. We don’t have to measure the exact length to get this ratio, instead use the perception to find the proper proportions. Pay close attention to how the set up makes you feel. When you feel something is off, play around with the arrangement until you feel at ease.
Layout
Most often, we find the furniture pushed towards the walls, leaving a large space in the middle of the room. This might make the room look bigger, but it leaves the space with a feel of off-balance. It also limits the amount of space that can be used otherwise. So, instead of using the wall as a guide, group the furniture into groups. Pick a focal point such as a fireplace or TV unit and arrange the furniture around it. The grouping can be done for two or more focal points as well.
Like a fireplace as one group, work desk another or a reading nook as the second functional area with chair, cushions and books. The idea is to arrange all furniture to give a feeling that it was purposefully placed to work with the rest of the items in the room.
Layering:
To bring aesthetic touch to the living room, effective layering can be done. A completely new look can be brought in by using the combination of wall covering with paint or wallpaper, flooring, furniture arrangement, appropriate usage of cushions and sofa covers, proper lightings, wall hangings, and décor items. Be sure to use the items that come in various shapes, sizes, and textures to bring in the best benefit of all the layers.
Theme:
When layering the room with all the elements that we have collected over the years, it may not give a single style statement. A touch of unity is important to pull all the elements together in the room. For example, use a color theme to have the majority of items in the room to fall together. Adding a few coordinating shades can be helpful to pull all the items in the room together. Or a pattern, texture also can be used in common to thread the items in the room.
