The drainage system does not depend on the pressure but works with the gravitational pulls in the sewer lines that continue the waste downward flow to the sewage treatment facility. Thought the system sounds simple, there are different elements involved in such as vents, traps and clean outs.

The vents help the waste to enter the drainpipes, if it is not there the waste water would not flow out properly and gets trapped, which will have to be siphoned away. Traps are important. The water flows through the trap and out through drain pipe. Every fixture should have traps – toilets, basins, bathtubs, kitchen sink. Traps will have clean-out plugs that give an easier access to remove the blockages.

Risk of water damage

It is important to know the risk of not having a proper water drainage system of the house and consider what might go wrong if the damages are not taken care of at immediately. The surface water will cause lateral pressure on the fountain wall and result in –
1. Foundation cracks
2. Outdoor landscaping will be damage
3. Flooding and property damage the may be caused due to basement leaks
4. Mold growth in the basement may result in the health of the member at home.
5. Drop in the value of the house as a result of water damage
The solution to all the issues is by repairing the exterior drainage to keep water away from flowing to the yard and foundation walls.

Let us quickly check some systems that a professional will be able to fix the problem of poor surface drainage.

French Drain – This is the type of drain where the perforated pipe is installed in a flat yard to drain the standing water. It involves the process of excavating a trench that slopes from the property. Then the pipe is installed. Before covering the trench, porous materials such as gravels or small stones are filled inside the trench. This helps the standing water to follow easily and find the route to escape through the porous material and will be seeped down to the French tile and drained away from the yard.

Footing Drain – Footing drain is the highly effective water drainage system where the pipe is installed around the perimeter of the foundation walls. The pipes are installed in the level as that of footing. The overflowing water or that is collected from the leakage is collected in the pipe through the top of footing into the basement and drains it away from the foundation walls. In this system also the drain is covered with gravel till the soil surface.

Gutter Drainage System- It is important to ensure the water collected in the roof due to rainfall or snowfall is drained properly, else will cause havoc. The gutter and downspout system helps in draining away the roof water from the house walls. Make sure that the downspout system is placed away from the walls. The water drained can be collected in storm sewer or catch basin.

Grading Drainage – Grading drainage is the simplest technique of drainage. It is done by sloping or grading the drainage system away from the house. The contractor should assess the gradient needed that helps the water to be driven away into the storm sewer.
