Cleaning the kitchen countertop

There are different types of countertop options – Marble, granite, soapstone, wood, and much more! The countertops should sever the purpose and serve the design. Each of these countertops has its own cleaning and maintenance needs. To keep the surface looking good, taking proper precautions and preventing any scratching or intense heat exposure should be avoided. Listed are some expert tips on how to clean countertops based on the material used in the kitchen.

Cleaning Wood Countertops

Material required:

  • Warm Water
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Nonabrasive cleaner
  • Spatula
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Lemon
  • Salt

Cleaning Method:

To have the wood countertops look beautiful, clean the countertop regularly with a non-abrasive cleaner or use a homemade mix of warm water and distilled white vinegar. Scrape the food particles with a spatula and wipe the counter after cleaning to make it completely dry.

Removing stain:

To remove the stain from the wooden countertop, sprinkle some salt directly on the stain and rub the half lemon to remove the stain. Clean the excess salt and lemon juice with water and vinegar.

Sealing

Wood countertops such as butcher-block and solid-wood countertops should be sealed for protection as they are susceptible to warping and cracking. There is a various way to do this such as by using a food-grade oil or wax. When the scratches and dings occur on the wood countertop, sand down the wood and reapply a fresh coat.

Cleaning Marble and Granite Countertops

Materials required:

  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Baking Soda
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Tape

Cleaning method:

T o clean the granite and marble countertops use a mix of warm water and mild dish soap and then wipe down with a microfiber towel to shine up the stone. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners, which can strip the sealer and etch the stone, as well as leave an acidic mark on the stone.

Removing Stain:

To remove the stains on granite or marble countertops, make a paste of baking soda and water for oil-based stain or hydrogen peroxide for water-based stains. Then apply the paste on the stain. Cover it with plastic wrap, and then tape down the edges. Let the mixture sit for a few days or at least overnight, and then rinse off the paste. Repeat doing the process till the stain is completely gone or till you are happy with the cleaning. But before applying the mixture on the entire counter, do a spot test first to make sure the method would not cause any change in the color or finish of the stone.

Granite and marble surfaces are popular because of its durability; even these counters need to be resealed regularly to protect them from stains.

Cleaning Laminate Countertops

Materials required:

  • Mild household cleaner
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Baking soda

Cleaning Method

Use a clean cotton cloth dipped in water mixed with mild, non-chemical liquid detergent to wipe laminated countertop. Do not use harsh products that contain acid or alkali as well as steel wool or scouring pads on these countertops.

Removing stains:

To remove the tough stains, leave the baking soda paste on the stain for some time, preferably overnight and wipe it off in the morning using a damp cloth. Or rub the stained spot with a cotton ball moistened with bleach, and then rinse and dry the spot.

Sealing

Wash the countertop with degreaser, rinse well, and let it dry. Then apply the laminate sealant.
